Brands are the Solution at Sustainable Brands '13

Sustainability Consult CEO Kathryn Sheridan attended the Sustainable Brands '13 conference in San Diego and was lucky enough to take part in the Big Brand Debate run by Futerra. The group was split into those who believe that brands can be part of the solution in solving the societal challenges we face and those who believe that brands got us into this mess and they can't get us out of it.

BigBrandDebateThe debate was certainly heated with Solitaire Townsend from Futerra keeping the peace between the two sides. Alongside three other sustainability practitioners, we presented our case on the main stage in the final plenary session. We argued that brands are aspirational, brands have the budget, brands have the power to mainstream sustainability (my two cents) and our final speaker urged all sides to work together for a better future. Both sides played it well but the loudest roar from the crowd came for our team - not surprising given the audience at the conference.

It was our first time at Sustainable Brands where inspiring speakers from the waste industry, bioplastics and bio-based chemicals companies presented alongside sustainability leaders like Interface, Puma, Rainforest Alliance and our friends at 1% for the Planet. We certainly felt it was a worthwhile investment.
